Cerumen, also known as earwax, is naturally produced by the glands in the ears to lubricate the ear canals and keep dust and debris from getting too far down in the ear canal.
Cerumen typically clears itself from the ears, but in some instances can accumulate and cause a blockage, especially if you wear earmolds or hearing aids.
Symptoms of a cerumen blockage include:
- Earache
- Tinnitus (ringing of the ears)
- Decreased hearing
- Feeling of ear fullness
- Dizziness
If a blockage occurs, it may need to be removed. This can be done at home or at your hearing care professional’s office, depending on the size and severity of the blockage.
Wax Management
This may seem obvious to you, but earwax (also known as cerumen) is produced by glands under the skin cells lining the ear canal. It works to protect the ear canal by keeping it clean and healthy. Wax is typically self-clearing but, if there is a disruption to the normal movement of wax, it can build up in the ear canal. This wax build-up can happen for many reasons, including:
- using hearing aids, noise protection, earplugs
- when cotton buds or other objects are inserted into the ear canal
- or if there has been previous surgery
The approach Seaside Hearing employs to removing earwax is microsuction (using a vacuum to remove the wax). Our team is highly specialized and experienced in using this technique. This method is preferred because it is the safest way to effectively remove wax.
This process is brief, simple and can make a huge difference in your hearing health. Ask the experts at Seaside Hearing if this option makes sense for you.
